Handmade etagere made from casting moulds - a creative highlight for your home
Step 1: Preparing materials and choosing a casting mould
Choosing the right casting mould is crucial to creating the perfect etagere. You will need various silicone casting moulds:
Stick candle holder Fun: For this, you need about 3 heaped tablespoons of Keraflott.
Stick candle holder Chic: Use approx. 4 heaped tablespoons of Keraflott. With the enclosed inserts, you can easily cast the mould in three different variations. The inserts cover the areas that should not be moulded. Decide on a variant for the etagere shown.
Round coaster, 18.5 cm: Approximately 5 heaped tablespoons of Keraflott are required for this mould.
Silicone full mould "Gnome": Approximately 3 heaped tablespoons of Keraflott are required for this mould.
Step 2: Mixing the Keraflott
Mix the Keraflott powder with water until a creamy mixture is obtained. It is important that no powder settles at the bottom of the bowl and that there are no lumps. This consistency is crucial for an even casting surface.
Step 3: Pouring and spreading
Pour the finished mixture into the selected moulds. Gently tap or shake the moulds on a tabletop to distribute the mixture evenly and remove any air bubbles.
Step 4: Demould and dry the castings
After about an hour, you can carefully remove the casts from the moulds. Then leave them to dry completely in the air. This process ensures that maximum strength is achieved.
Step 5: Smooth the edges
If the castings have rough edges, you can smooth them slightly with sandpaper until all surfaces are nice and smooth.
Step 6: Assemble the etagere
Now you can connect the individual parts of your etagere with handicraft glue:
Glue the "Fun stick candle holder" in the centre of the "Round coaster". Then attach the "Chic stick candle holder" to the "Fun stick candle holder".
Step 7: Safety and decoration
If you plan to present edible decorations such as fruit on the etagere, you should coat them with food-safe varnish beforehand.
Fill a small terracotta pot with flower arrangement foam and arrange pearl hyacinths in it as decorative elements. Together with a gnome and some decorative eggs, they give the etagere a charming look. You can fix these decorations in place with hot glue if required. Finally, pine wood shavings, loosely distributed on the levels of the etagere, add a natural and warm finish.
