Needle-Felting a Felt Necklace: Small Flower and Heart Pendants Made from Märchenwolle
Get your “ felt mat ” ready and choose your favorite colors from the Märchenwolle. For beginners, it’s helpful to stick to one color family per shape at first, so the result looks calm and harmonious.
1) Place the wool in the cut out form
Tear off a small piece of “ knit felting wool ” and gently fluff up the fibers. This will help them bond more easily later. Place the wool into an “ cut out form ” and spread it out to the edges. Make sure the layer isn’t too thick: An even layer sets faster during needle felting and results in clean edges. Then place the filled mold on the felt mat, so the mat cushions the needle pricks and you can work neatly.
2) Needle felting: Compact the wool and build up the shape
Poke the felting needle vertically into the wool repeatedly. The felting needle consists of several needles with small barbs. These barbs pull the fibers together as you pierce them—this creates the typical felt, that holds firmly and can be shaped. Start by working along the edge to define the contour of the cut out form , and then fill in the center evenly.
3) Felt evenly and firmly: Rotate the shape occasionally
To ensure the top and bottom are equally dense, rotate the cut out form on the felt mat. from time to time. This compacts the felt all around, keeping the shape nice and even. When the surface feels compact and the fibers are no longer loose, the felt is firm enough. Carefully remove the finished felt shape from the cut out form and, if necessary, reshape the edges with a few additional needle stitches.
4) Create Multiple Felt Ornaments
Repeat the process with all the shapes you want for your “ chain ” or garland.
5) Stringing: Connecting the felt pieces and beads to the “ chain ”
Cut a piece of cotton cord to any length you like and use a needle to thread the felted pieces and beads onto it. Carefully tie a knot in the cord and trim off the excess thread. Then apply a small dot of glue to the knot to prevent it from coming undone. This will keep your needle-felted necklace secure.
