Modelling a practical wool basket

If you love modelling and are looking for a really practical idea, then this DIY basket for wool made from FIMO is just the thing for you. These instructions will show you how to create a personalised and practical accessory for your handicraft hobby with little effort. Design the basket decoratively and according to your personal taste in a leather look. The practical highlight - you can place your ball of wool or yarn in the bowl so that it is always neatly stored when crocheting or knitting. And your needlework project can be easily put away without getting tangled up.
Step-by-step instructions for your FIMO wool basket

1. preparation of the FIMO clay
Start by mixing two blocks of FIMO "leather effect". This modelling clay looks like leather when hardened. For our decorative example, we have mixed the two colours 179 and 519 from the "Leather effect" material pack. Feel free to use the colours of your choice.
If the mixture is too hard and difficult to model, add a third of FIMO Mix Quick. This special kneading aid makes the modelling clay smoother and easier to shape, so that you can realise your creative idea with ease.

2. moulding your wool storage basket
The next step is to shape the basket. There are no limits to your creativity here - decide whether you want it to be round, oval or have a completely unique shape. Make sure that the walls of the bowl are about 3 mm thick on average so that the eyelet can be worked in easily later.
3. work in the eyelet
As soon as the shape of your wool basket is ready, make a small opening for the eyelet. To do this, first place the eyelet in the desired position, but remove it again after pressing it in to make it easier to attach later. Now you can easily remove the FIMO at the marked point and insert the eyelet there after the baking process.

4. hardening in the oven

Preheat your oven to 130 °C and line the base with baking paper or aluminium foil to protect your workpiece from direct heat. Bake the moulded FIMO project for 30 minutes. Check the basket to avoid cracks or uneven hardening. After hardening, allow the model to cool slowly to give it its beautiful leather-like surface.

5. attaching the eyelet
Finally, attach the previously planned eyelet. Follow the instructions on the eyelet packaging: insert the eyelet into the hole provided, attach the ring to the back and carefully hammer everything together. This creates a sturdy and decorative detail on your basket.
