Basic concepts of knitting

Before you start knitting your Sophie scarf, let's go through the basics. Knitting is about using needles to form stitches from a yarn, which then become a fabric. The two basic knitting techniques are 'knit stitches' and 'purl stitches'.

Knitting on the right
means going into the stitch from the front with the knitting needle, "reaching" behind the yarn and pulling it forwards to form a new stitch.

Knit purl
means inserting the knitting needle into the stitch from the back, "reaching" in front of the yarn with the needle and pulling it through the existing stitch to form a new stitch.
Knit stockinette
When knitting in stockinette stitch, only knit stitches are knitted in one row (right side row) and only purl stitches are knitted in the following row (wrong side row).
This method creates a smooth, uniform surface with a recognisable front and back pattern.

Knit garter stitch
Knitting in garter stitch means that you only knit stitches in every row - both back and forth. This creates a wavy, more textured pattern that looks the same on both sides.

Edge stitches
With this idea, 3 stitches are always knitted as a "garter stitch edge", i.e. in every row, no matter how many stitches are on the needle, the first 3 stitches and the last 3 stitches are always knitted.

Increase one stitch purlwise
In these instructions, stitches are increased within the knitting rows by slipping the left knitting needle under the cross yarn (the yarn that runs between the knitted stitches) and then pulling the knitting yarn to a new stitch = knitting.

When knitting right sides together, you insert the needle through 2 stitches at the same time and pull the yarn through to a new stitch.
How to knit your "Sophie scarf"

Start by creating an initial loop and placing it on a needle. This is the start of your knitting project. Now, add more stitches until you have 4 stitches on your needle. These are the base to create the triangular shawl.

Knit the first 5 rows in garter stitch.
6th row (this is a WS row): knit 2 stitches, then purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches so that you have 5 stitches on the needle.
7th - 11th row: knit in garter stitch
12th row: knit 3 stitches, purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches (= 6 stitches)
13th - 18th row: After the 3 garter stitch edge stitches, increase one stitch purlwise on the 13th row. All further stitches in these rows between the edge stitches are knitted stocking stitch.
19th - 50th row: Continue knitting in this way, increasing a purl stitch in rows 19, 25, 31, 37, 43 and 49.
Rows 49 to 60 consist of 15 stitches each. After this, the number of stitches decreases again:
Rows 61 - 107: In rows 61, 67, 73, 79, 85, 91, 97,103 and 109, the 4th and 5th stitches (after the 3 garter stitch edge stitches), i.e. 2 stitches are knitted together to form one stitch.
109th row: Knit together after 2 edge stitches.
110th - 114th row: Knit the next 4 rows in garter stitch (5 stitches per row)
115th row: Knit 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch.
116th row: Knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch. Knit 3 rows in garter stitch.

Finally, cast off all the stitches on the needle: always pull one stitch over the previous stitch until you only have 1 stitch left on the knitting needle. Pull your knitting thread through this to form a knot.
If you want to knit a "dot pattern" like the example scarf, you can achieve this by purling a single stitch in between (from the 17th row onwards at regular intervals).
Your knitted piece is as good as finished. Sew all the threads together with a darning needle. Moisten the scarf and stretch it (you will probably get a scarf measuring approx. 140 x 18 cm.) After drying, your new Sophie scarf is ready to wear.
