Creative Doorstop: DIY Sewing Guide
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Braid the Rope
To give your doorstop the perfect nautical look, you'll first need to braid a rope. This can later be used as a handle. Take three equally long paracord ropes, braid them together, and tie a firm knot at each end. This will prevent the braid from coming undone.
2. Transfer and Pin the Pattern
First, design the pattern for your pouch. For a doorstop in the shape of a cube, you'll need six equally sized squares. In one of these squares, cut a small slit that's just big enough for the rope. The slit should only be wide enough so that the knots won't slip through.
Once the slit has been hemmed and the rope passes through, sew all four sides of each square to one another on the wrong side of the fabric. Before you start sewing, pin the squares neatly to ensure nothing moves.
3. Fill the Sand Pouch
For the filling of the doorstop, use regular sand. Alternatively, cherry pits or small pebbles can also be used. Fill the sand into a freezer bag and seal it well. This will prevent the sand from seeping through the fabric.
4. Sew Individual Sides and Fill the Pouch
Sew all the squares together, leaving one side open. Turn the pouch right side out and fill it with the sand and the rope. Secure the rope with a few hand stitches if desired. Finally, hand-sew the last two sides of the doorstop together. Ensure you select a matching thread color for your fabric. Decorate your doorstop with beads, ribbons, or other embellishments as you like.
